In the mid-'90's Perth band iNFeCTeD earned themselves a reputation as one of the most innovative and interesting metal bands to come out of Australia. Taking a non-cliched approach to the death metal genre through thought-provoking lyrics and left-of-centre musical experimentation, they released 2 widely lauded albums, toured the country twice, performed at the 1996 Big Day Out and held their own supporting a host of international heavyweights including Fear Factory, Napalm Death, Morbid Angel, Boltthrower and Carcass.
Their original 2 album deal with Shock Records completed in 1995, the band dissolved somewhat acrimoniously in late 1996 after failing to secure a new record deal for their planned third album without the condition of moving from Perth to the east coast, which they were unwilling to do. Members of the band went on to other prominent projects - hard rock outfits Headshot and The Devil Rides Out for frontman Joey K, black metal beasts Tyrant and Mhorgl for bass player James Campbell and the hardcore crossover attack of PC Thug for drummer Gareth Morris.
Fast forward to 2003 and the band decided to reunite to record 'straight white god', the last song they wrote together before the split but never captured in the studio. The intent was to record the song for posterity and to give the members a sense of closure - a happier place to leave the band in place of the bitter aftertaste of '96. This resulted to a "one-off" reunion show to launch the single which was a huge success, a lot of fun and, most importantly, helped to heal some old wounds. It was such a success that it led to another reunion show in 2007. With a bit of money in the kitty an idea was struck - why not re-release their classic debut album 'crawlspace', long since out of print, for a new generation of metal fans?
And so here we are in 2009 with the 15th anniversary remastered edition of crawlspace released on Prime Cuts Music through Riot distribution.
The seminal album, which was mentioned in the same breath as early Fear Factory and Godflesh at the time for it's industrial metal mixture of brains and brawn, has finally been given the mastering it deserved. Back in 1993 the process was more an afterthought than an artform and the new version sounds much bigger and meatier, whilst retaining the paint-stripping abrasive quality of the original.
It also features all-new sleeve artwork and a brand new remix bonus track - fan favourite 'Assimilate' has been given a 5 minute industrial workout by producer Andrew Wright, who recorded the original album and now also serves as their live keyboard player.
Re-enter the crawlspace - a true classic of Australian extreme metal...
