Vespers Descent - Three Faces Of Eve

Review by: Ian Busch - Primal Agony Webzine - 2003

The sound of melodic Death Metal is thriving all over the world and Australia is no exception. So when this CD arrived from Western Australian band Vespers Descent it was great to hear that we Aussies can still match it with the best.

Having been together as a fully operational band since 2001 (although the band started in 1999) this five piece band have managed to find a great mix of the brutal side of Death Metal and strong melody on this five track debut EP. Opening with the title track "Three Faces Of Eve" you instantly hear the Swedish Death Metal influence with a guitar sound that reverberates so much that it sounds slightly distorted. It is as heavy as hell with the clear deathy vocals Of Jack Wolski a treat to hear in themselves on this song. The twin guitar harmonies they have going on are nothing short of fantastic and with a strong melody running through this it one amazing song. Comparisons to Arch Enemy would not be far off the mark when describing this song.

Having such an awesome opening song could be hard to match for the rest of the EP but that is not the case with this. "All that Remains" has all the attributes of the previous song and delivers the goods to the highest metal standard. "Plains Of Azure Light" leans more towards a thrashy edge with the vocals a bit more Black Metal influenced. Mid song things take a satanic sounding twist vocally before a blazing solo lets rip before thrashing out to the end

"Infidels Embrace" mixes a modern Death Metal sound with the brutality of the Florida Death Metal sound while rounding out the EP with "Gathering The Lost". With this sounding the most complex and varied in ideas musically it shows a full range of their brutal and melodic sides and closes the EP with all the melodic death aggression that is Vespers Descent.

I highly recommend it to everyone who likes heavy melodic Death Metal as it is sure to impress you as well

Review by: Gloon - Gloon Webzine - 2004

Holy shit do these Aussie boys kick some serious arse, hailing from Australia's Western shores Vespers Descent's debut 'Three Faces of Eve' is a must have for all fans of the Melodic Death Metal genre. Formed in 1999 from the ashes of Syntony, Vespers Descent have had the privilege to support some of Europe's best over the last few years and the Euro sound has definitely rubbed off in their sound and quality. The ghost of Gandalf and Amon Amarth can be heard scattered throughout the 5 tracks making up this EP as well as elements of power and thrash to make a truly devastating concoction of metal mayhem. Song writing is also a strength of the band managing to write heavy, catchy, gripping songs while not having to strictly stick to the predictable verse-chorus-verse formula of most aspiring bands. Lyrically it's a corker too capturing the imagination and leaving enough mystery as not to be too predictable and inane. Basically this is one of the best Aussie releases I have heard this year, a band willing to take on a modern innovative metal approach rather than sounding either too retro or too nu. Great stuff well deserved on the hype and praise showered on them by there WA supporters.
